Most people believe calorie counting and weightloss automatically go hand in hand. Calories, of course, are related to weightloss, but you don't have to make calorie counting an obsession. In fact, if you eat a balanced and healthy diet with moderate portion servings, you won't have to count calories at all.
Moderation in All Things
You gain weight because you aren't using more calories than you eat. You gain weight, in other words, because you have developed bad habits. To lose weight, you must change the bad habits to good habits.
Developing good habits doesn't mean becoming someone who never gets to eat a bowl of ice cream. It means becoming someone who occasionally eats a bowl of low fat ice cream. But mostly it means understanding your body's nutritional requirements and fulfilling them with calories that are good for you.
When you attempt strict calorie counting and weightloss, what often happens is you start craving the foods you aren't eating on your diet. Simple boredom and a desire to eat what you are denying yourself result in binges that undo much of your efforts.
In addition, a strict diet that requires you to eat the same thing day in and day out without variation is doomed to failure from the start. You may be able to maintain the routine for a while, but eventually you'll want to eat other foods. So calorie counting and weightloss make a boring and dreary partnership that will only be productive for a while.
Count Fat Grams Instead of Calories
Calorie counting and weightloss involves deciding every day how many calories you've eaten, how many you've burned, and how many you can still eat and stay within the predetermined limits. Food is composed of carbohydrates, protein and fat. Fat has the most calories of three nutrients.
One gram of fat equals 9 calories whereas one gram of carbohydrates only has 4 calories. It doesn't take long to figure out that calorie counting and weightloss should be changed to fat counting and weight loss.
There are three major steps you can take to lose weight naturally, in a healthy manner and steadily. First you should eat small balanced meals throughout the day instead of 3 big meals. Secondly, you should restrict the amount of fat in your diet.
Thirdly, you must start exercising. Calorie counting and weight loss is a basically futile plan given human nature. But proper nutrition coupled with regular exercise will result in weight loss at a normal pace and producing results that can be maintained throughout your life.
A personal trainer can work with you to develop a healthy dietary plan that reduces fat. A trainer will also create a customized exercise program that burns calories. Becoming more active has two goals. The first is to increase your calories use in order to lose weight.
The second reason to increase your activity is because, once you lose the weight, you wan to be able to keep it off. So don't worry about calorie counting and weightloss. Just take the advice of your personal trainer and use common sense.
